MSM
Maastricht society of MusicQUARTET
Founded in 2016 by violinist Nikita Akulov, the Maastricht Society of Music (MSM) began as an initiative to connect Conservatorium Maastricht students with cultural institutions and clients, creating performance opportunities and partnerships. As the project flourished, the group evolved into a dedicated string quartet, formally establishing the MSM Quartet in 2018.
With polished classical artistry, MSM is devoted to 20th-century repertoire and vividly engaged with new music.
Among other recognitions, MSM was granted the Stadsgoud Competition prize for its innovative community engagement plan, enabling the launch of the Maastricht Classical Chamber Music Series in 2019, which has enriched the region’s cultural life.
Accolades include the Grand Prix du Public at the Maastricht Awards of Music (2022) and the First Great Award at the Vienna International Competition (2024). The latter prize includes a debut album recorded with Orpheus Label, to be distributed and promoted internationally.
Since 2024, the quartet has been affiliated with the Netherlands String Quartet Academy (NSKA), being the new “Quartet in Residence” during season 2025-2026.
MSM is as well a member of the international initiative Musethica, bringing music to people without an easy access to classical concerts and contributes to the cultural integration of marginalized and discriminated communities.
